Legacy Account Migration FAQ

What’s this about?

This page answers questions about migrating legacy RubyTapas accounts from RubyTapas 1.0 to RubyTapas 2.0.

What is RubyTapas 1.0?

From September 2012 to May 2016, RubyTapas subscriptions were delivered and billed through a hosted service called DPD. If you joined RubyTapas before June 2016, this is the system you’re used to.

What is RubyTapas 2.0?

At the end of May, 2016, we rolled out a completely new RubyTapas website. It supersedes the old hosted platform, and adds many requested features, with more to come. Examples of the new features include:

  • Streaming video right from the site
  • Full-text search across all episodes
  • Episode categorization and tags
  • User forums

What’s a legacy account? Do I have a legacy account?

If you:

  • Became a RubyTapas subscriber before May 31, 2016; and
  • Access the RubyTapas content at rubytapas.dpdcart.com or via the RSS/iTunes feed; and
  • Have not already followed emailed instructions to migrate your account

…then you have a legacy account.

Do I have to migrate my account?

If you want to continue to be a RubyTapas subscriber, and you want to keep your existing plan pricing, you must migrate your account by August 31, 2016.

The legacy RubyTapas 1.0/DPD site will be permanently retired shortly after this date.

In addition, after the end of July we will stop publishing new episodes on the 1.0 site.

What was that about keeping my old pricing?

When RubyTapas launched, $9/month was a typical price level for a developer-centric screencast series. That’s no longer the case. As part of the transition to RubyTapas 2.0, subscription pricing was updated (read: increased). The new rates reflect the vastly expanded library of content that is available to subscribers, and the improvements we’ve made to both the content and user experience.

However, as a “thank you” to legacy subscribers for your support and loyalty over the years, we’re bridging your “legacy” pricing plan over to the new system. You’ll pay the same monthly rate you always have after migrating your account.

How do I migrate my account?

You will receive detailed instructions via email, from [email protected]. Please add this address as a contact in order to ensure the email gets through.

Most of the migration will be taken care of for you. All you’ll have to do is log in, re-enter your payment information, and update your password.

I haven’t received an email about migrating my account

Accounts are being migrated in batches, so yours might not have gone out yet. See the timeline below for the rough schedule. If you have not received an instructions mailing by July 31, 2016, please do get in touch.

I can’t see anywhere to enter my payment info

Click “Sign Up”. You’ll see fields to enter credit card info on the next page.

Why do I have to re-enter my payment information?

Unfortunately, since all of your payment information is locked up inside payment processors, that’s the one piece of the migration we can’t automate.

Does this mean I’ll get double-billed?

As part of the migration process, we’ll create a “bridge transaction” which echoes your last payment on the old system. When you re-enter your payment information, the system will automatically pro-rate your first payment on RubyTapas 2.0 to take this last payment into account.

After completing your migration, your old 1.0 account will be closed within 48 hours. If this doesn’t happen, or if for any reason you think you have been double-billed after migration, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll make things right.

Where’s the PayPal option?

Sorry, we’re not offering a PayPal payment option for RubyTapas 2.0 at this time.

Why not??

Because from a vendor’s point of view, PayPal subscription billing is a garbage fire wrapped in a trainwreck dipped in an oil spill. In the past, our subscription hosting platform soaked up the lion’s share of the support headaches associated with PayPal, but going forward we won’t have that luxury.

Why did I just get an email that says my RubyTapas account has been cancelled?

If you followed the emailed steps to complete your migration, this is normal and expected. It means that we’ve automatically cancelled your old RubyTapas 1.0 account now that you’ve switched to the new site.

If you received this message but haven’t received any emails about account migration, please do get in touch.

What’s the timeline for the upgrade?

These dates are subject to change, especially if we run into any hiccups in the process.
